It is biggest Maldivian spectacle since Mohamed Amin Didi's inauguration ceremony and Victory and New Radiant final match. Elderly ladies wearing veils gathered as rain soaked. They were gathered to see their new leader. The son of their former leader Maumoon.

I talked to one elderly lady Faathma Fulhi who had cheered for president maumoon in all elections of the country. Ms Fulhi retired from political campaigning in 2008 after a staggering defeat. But she can't spend time at home with her three grandchildren and her parrot Musinbee because the politics of Maldives has undergone grand transformation.

The new kid in the block is none other than Ghassan Maumoon. Young, educated in UK and full of charm.

"More handsome than father," said Faathma Fulhi sighing. "I wish I was born in the 80s".

There is no question young politicians from MDP are worried. Alhan Fahmy went with group marching towards Endherimaage. His political career and ambition of presidency for 2018 is already nightmare with Ghassan in horizon. Eva Abdulla, wearing a yellow blouse, went to Endherimaage too.

Talking to Minivan News reporters Eva said Ghassan was not presidential material. But she agreed that he was handsome.

"We are worried because the President is not able to handle the economy. Our parents are spending more to buy food for us. We are able to have less milk than before. MP arrested for having sex with goat

Police arrested today Hassan Adil, an MP from Maldivian Democratic Party, for allegedly having sex with a goat. Adil is suspected of having sex with the goat in Makunudhoo island in Haa Dhaal.

"The owner of the goat found the poor animal on the beach. It was very weak," the newly elected councillor of Makunudhoo told reporters. The local council referred the matter to police as the Local Governance Act does not prescribe a course of action for councils to adopt when a goat is raped.

The police confirmed the case was under investigation.

Adil was in Makunudhoo to campaign for Ibrahim Hussain Zaki, the special enjoy of the president, currently contesting for MDP presidency.

"If I had known Adil had no way of fulfilling his carnal desires I would have invited him to my harem. I would have introduced him to my entourage of beautiful young ladies and wine," Zaki told reporters.

Zaki's campaign office said the incident would not affect the special enjoy's popularity nor his edge in the campaign over rival Ibrahim Didi, former fisheries minister.

"I don't think even 20,000 is now sufficient. The allowance has to be given because some MPs need that money to procure the services of prostitutes and visit the best whorehouses in the region. Without the allowance there will be more scandals involving goats," Mariya said in parliament, explaining the reason for withdrawing the resolution.

Mariya said she will not be taking the monthly allowance. "I get enough money to buy cucumbers," Mariya said.

The Human Rights Commission of Maldives said it will not comment on the goat incident as animal rights is not part of the commission's mandate.

After consulting religious scholars the people of Makunudhoo killed the goat according to Islamic tradition and buried it. A spokesman for police said this amounted to destroying the evidence as the police forensic team has not reached Makunudhoo yet.

Mohamed Zuhair, the press secretary for president, denied the claims made by opposition that evidence was purposefully destroyed to protect the MP from MDP. He said the government would introduce new steps to protect animals in the Maldives.

"The president is considering to put a policeman behind every goat," Zuhair said.

Don't walk like a Maldivian - what Egyptians can learn

There is a revolution brewing in Egypt. It is being cooked in a cauldron in Tahrir Square. If the heat is strong enough the dictatorial rule of Hosni Mubarak will be over in a matter of months if not weeks. When a new democratic government is established in Egypt, it can learn some lessons from the democratic exercise of the Maldives.

The new President of Egypt should be someone with a vision, bold enough to take decisive action and should prefer action over words. He or she should not make false campaign promises. Major cities in Egypt has a large population but people are living in abject poverty. The new president should not promise to build 10,000 flats in Alexandria, 10,500 flats in Cairo and 11,500 flats in Sinai in five years. The economy of Egypt should be in a better shape before such ambitious projects are implemented. Or else the new president will earn the nickname of Al-Akh Imaaraath.

The new President, whether he is El-Baradai or Amru Moussa, or a completely different person, should not appoint corrupt figures from the Mubarak regime to influential posts. The new president should not appoint as the president's special envoy someone accused of profiting from selling resorts in Sherm Al-Shaikh.

The new President should immediately work to promote the living conditions of the inhabitants of Cairo. He or she should appoint a competent person as the president of Cairo Municipality. This post should not be given to a person just because he has spent a fortune to bring the new government to power. This post should not be given to a person who used influence to bring back to Egypt his son who was serving a drug related sentence in Libya.

The new President should not appoint former porn stars to Cabinet. He or she should not appoint a nutritionist as deputy foreign minister or a liar as foreign minister. He or she should appoint very capable people to the Cabinet because the failures of the Cabinet will collectively weaken the democracy.

The new president should not trust the leaders of the political parties in the ruling coalition, especially the Chairperson of the largest party. If an inefficient person is the Chairperson then the majority of the seats in parliament will go to Mubarak sympathizers and Mubarak's party NDP in the next parliament election. Majority of seats in the local council election will also go to Mubarak's party except in Cairo and Alexandria.

Even if Gemal Mubarak tries to run for a seat in parliament, the democratic parties should not promote an idiot as a candidate in that constituency with the aim of defeating Gemal Mubarak.

The new president should not make bold promises that Mubarak will be prosecuted and taken to International Court of Justice if the new president has no intention of doing it. Mubarak must be able to live in Egypt with dignity but the people who were wronged and tortured under his regime must be provided with justice.

The new president should appoint someone with courage to reform the judicial sector of Egypt as it is one of the most corrupt sectors. However, if a gang riding horses or camels come and attack the reformist with knives, the president should protect the reformist and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The new government can cut state funding for pro-Mubarak newspaper Al-Ahram but the state-owned TV stations should be fully independent. Those TV stations should not be another vehicle of propaganda and air programmes praising the new government.

The new president should be a president for all cities and towns of Egypt. He or she should be willing to reach out to Mubarak supporters and unite the whole Egypt. Hence, he or she should make sure foundation stones and bricks are not in the colour of the ruling party or parties but in the colour of concrete. The lesson the new president should learn from Maldivians is "ka'cha'h elhi bingale'h kechaai hamayaih elhiyas hunnaanee kachaseheve." A foundation that is laid in a wrong way will affect the building even if it reaches the sky. This is the wisdom used by Egyptian pharaohs when they built the pyramids.

Islamic Ministry also condemned Dhiraagu for charging high prices from customers. Islam instructs people not to cheat when doing business and to charge reasonable prices, Minister Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari said. He recalled the story when Caliph Umar bin Khattab overheard a woman telling her daughter to mix water with milk to increase volume of milk when selling. Umar was disguised as an ordinary man and strolling through the city of Medina during the night to see if everything was alright. (This practice of walking around the city in disguise was later copied by King Abdullah of Jordan, President Nasheed of Maldives and Batman in Gotham City. President Nasheed did this during Ramadan.) Majeed said Dhiraagu charges high prices for very few kilobytes of data and it was like mixing water with milk.

Naseem, who is a friend of the owner of this blog and who had helped in editing the posts, said the attack on Dhiraagu is a result of repeatedly ignoring requests by customers to reduce the prices. Naseem went to Communications Authority of Maldives in 2009 to complain about Dhiraagu's prices.

"If they listened to me then and improved services we will not be facing this problem. Now a group of teenagers are disrupting the whole Internet in Maldives through DDoS," Naseem said.

Naseem, who is celebrating getting 3,000 people's signatures to form his mentor Dr Munavvar's party, said their party will take the issue of Dhiraagu's sale of shares to Cable & Wireless.

Man sentenced for possession of porn film featuring Cabinet Minister

The Criminal Court yesterday sentenced a man to six months imprisonment after the court found him guilty of possession of pornography featuring a Cabinet Minister.

The Criminal Court identified the person as Ali Jinah of Gulhi in Kaafu Atoll.

The Court said the police officers who went to search Jinah’s house on last year October discovered eight magazines containing pornographic pictures, one file containing large number of pornographic pictures and one CD containing a porn film featuring a Cabinet Minister of Maldives.

Jinah was sentenced for possessing contraband.

The Court said Jinah denied the charges, claiming that the police did not find the materials inside his room and that he had never showed such materials to anyone.

The Criminal Court said that according to the word of the police officers who went to the scene, “it is known that the materials were found inside Jinah’s room.”

"We take such matters very seriously. Any attempt to ruin the reputation of a Cabinet Minister by possessing porn films featuring a Minister will be dealt with prompt arrest and prosecution," Cabinet Secretary Captain Abdulla Saeed told Minivan News.

Government to pioneer porn industry in Maldives

The government of Maldives signed an agreement today with Vivid Entertainment of America to develop a porn industry in the Maldives.

"The Cabinet has decided to develop a porn industry in Maldives to increase job opportunities for school-leavers and boost the Maldivian economy," Cabinet Secretary Captain Abdulla Saeed told reporters.

The porn industry will be developed under the Public Private Partnership Programme (PPP). State-of-the-art production facilities will be developed in Aarah, the venue for the recently held Hay Festival.

"The President rarely uses Aarah as a retreat now and the government has decided to allocate the island to develop the porn industry," Saeed said.

By forming a partnership with Vivid Entertainment, a market leader in the adult entertainment, the government hopes to gain a return on investment within a short period of time.

The President has formed a four-member committee to oversee the development of a porn industry in Maldives. The committee consist of one member from the Cabinet, one representative of Invest Maldives, one representative of Ministry of Finance and one representative of Ministry of Islamic Affairs. The newly appointed Minister of Transport, Communication and Civil Aviation Mr Adil Saleem will chair the committee.

The porn industry earns billions of dollars worldwide each year.

Corruption Index ranks Maldives below Zimbabwe

The Maldives has been ranked 143 in Transparency International’s 2010 Corruption Perception Index, equal with Pakistan and below Zimbabwe.

The ranking represents a fall of 15 places since the 2009 Index, which itself fell 15 places from the 2008 Index.

The Maldives is now ranked well below regional neighbours, including India (87), Sri Lanka (91) and Bangladesh (134). Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore ranked first, while Somalia ranked last at 178, below Burma and Afghanistan.

Speaking to Minivan News, the Maldives Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed said the drop in the index is due to the corruption of politicians associated with the previous regime.

"The decline reflects the corruption of politicians associated with the previous regime such as Ibrahim Hussain Zaki. The world is only now learning about the extent of corruption practiced by Zaki under the former regime. Such exposure is inevitable as a society becomes liberal," explained Dr Shaheed.

Ibrahim Hussain Zaki was tourism minister and later planning minister under former president Gayoom. Zaki allegedly accepted bribes worth millions of dollars, favouring certain resort owners in awarding new islands for tourism development during his term as tourism minister. President Gayoom was forced to remove Zaki from Cabinet in November 2003 after serious allegations of corruption.

Responding to the claims that the drop in corruption perception index was due to the practices of former regime, Mohamed Hussain Shareef, the Spokesperson for former President Gayoom, said the current government was more corrupt than the former government.

"The donor community has lost trust in the new government. Foreign Minister Dr Ahmed Shaheed has appointed his close associates to diplomatic missions overseas. He has appointed his girlfriends as High Commissioners and Ambassadors even though they do not have any experience of diplomacy. Unlike President Gayoom who appointed people to high posts based on merit, the current government is a leader in nepotism," said Shareef.

"Gadhdhoo Zahir's daughter was promoted in Foreign Ministry because Dr Shaheed wanted Zahir's vote in parliament to escape a no confidence motion," Shareef added. "I know how Dr Shaheed works because he was my boss at Strategic Communications Department of The President's Office."

The president's press secretary Mohamed Zuhair refused to blame the previous government or the current government for the decline in the corruption perception index.

"Blaming the previous government or the current government for this decline is not important. The current government and the former government is run by the same group of people. Ahmed Abdulla (Adubarey), Red Wave Saleem, Lolly Jabir and Alhan Fahmy are just some examples. This proves perception of corruption changes over time. Yesterday we said those people were corrupt. Today we embrace them as heroes. Life is like that," explained Zuhair.

"Next year Maldives could be above Denmark and New Zealand in the corruption perception index. President Nasheed can work miracles. Look at what he did to Dhiddhoo, Velidhoo and Gulhi Falhu with the help of Boskalis. A man who can hold a cabinet meeting underwater can do anything above water," said Zuhair.

President Nasheed to lead Gay Pride March in Maldives

Two ex-terrorists to be sent to Pakistan with aid

Two ex-terrorists who planned Sultan Park bombing in Male in September 2007 are to be sent to flood-stricken Pakistan with aid, the President's Office said today.

President Mohamed Nasheed recently pardoned the two men who set off an IED in Sultan Park injuring foreign tourists. The men who were serving a 15-year sentence are now free and their sentence will be waived off if they do not commit a crime within the next three years. The two men are Mohamed Sobah of Villimale, Landhooge, and Ahmed Naseer of Kanduhulhudhoo, Saadhunaa Manzil.

"Their dream is to reunite with their friends in Pakistan. After pardoning them the least we could do for them is to help them achieve that," said Mohamed Zuhair, the President's Press Secretary.

Several co-conspirators of the bombing fled from Maldives and are now living in Pakistan.

Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the state minister for Islamic Ministry, said he welcomed this news. He said the donations Adhaalath Party has collected from Maldivians will also be sent to Pakistan with the two men. Shaheem did not say if he had rehabilitated the two ex-terrorists like he rehabilitated the prisoners from Guantanamo Bay.

Asked if there was any risk of the two men committing a crime in Pakistan, Zuhair said he felt there was no threat. "I am no bomb disposal expert. But there is 99% probability that a bomb will not explode in flood waters," Zuhair said.

"I am a dentist by profession. Even though I was appointed the Fisheries Minister, my first real experience of the underwater life was when I started training for the cabinet dive. Since then I have been hooked to diving. I have already applied for a job at a Dive Center at a resort," said Ibrahim Didi, the former Minister for Fisheries. "I will now be able to see more fish than what I saw during the time I was the Fisheries Minister."

"I am tired of banning New Year parties and bringing Zakir Naik. I have applied for a job at a resort. I will be now diving everyday and in my spare time I will be riding banana boats. President Nasheed's press secretary Mohamed Zuhair said the President would not have organised the underwater cabinet meeting last October had he predicted his cabinet would get so hooked with diving that they would resign from their posts.

Maldives has gone green to mark this year's Environment Day by inviting Islamic preacher from UK Abdul Rahman Green. The religious NGO Jamiyathul Salaf has organised an event "The Call: Liv Islam" in which Green is lecturing at the Carnival area of Male. Sheikh Shaheem to revoke license of unqualified preachers

Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the Minister of State for Islamic Affairs has said he will revoke the preaching licenses of all unqualified preachers in Maldives. The following guidelines shall be used to determine if a preacher is qualified or not:

1. The preacher or scholar should be married to 3 or more wives. Sheikh Shaheem said Gasim Ibrahim will be able to control the country because he is married to 4 women. Any preacher married to 4 women will be able to control the audience during preaching, Sheikh Shaheem explained.

2. The preacher or scholar should encourage men to keep slave girls or concubines. Sheikh Shaheem strongly encourages men to keep concubines. When rumours spread in Male' about a secretly kept concubine, Sheikh Shaheem made fun of the people who spread the news instead of criticizing the practice. He did not say the practice was against Islamic teachings.

3. The preacher or scholar must be able to give lectures on comparative religion, making fun of other religions. Sheikh Shaheem recently told Minivan News he could teach comparative religion in Maldives because he learned about it. However, Sheikh Hussain Rasheed Ahmed, President of Adhaalath Party, later told Minivan News there was nobody in Maldives who could teach comparative religion in the Maldives.

4. The preacher or scholar must explain the cause of natural catastrophes as God's curses. The preacher should say the tsunami was caused by Maldivian women running naked on the white sandy beaches and the earthquake in Taiwan on April 26 was caused by Boobquake, western women showing their cleavage to challenge an Iranian cleric.

Based on the above criteria, Sheikh Shaheem is the only qualified preacher in the Maldives. The first person whose license will be revoked is Sheikh Hussain Rasheed who is openly defying Sheikh Shaheem. The next will be Sheikh Ilyas who is more popular than Shaheem because of his famous description of heaven full of women with erect nipples. The third will be Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed (Naraka Fareed) whose lectures have live videos from hell projected on a screen. When all other preachers are out of the scene, Sheikh Shaheem will make his bid for the presidency in 2013.

Maldives Minister of State for Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed is to start a rehabilitation programme for prisoners in Guantanamo Bay.

"We selected Shaheem based on his credentials and his successful rehabilitation of the infamous radicals from Himandhoo Island," a White House spokesperson told the Associated Press.

Sheikh Shaheem has been in the spotlight recently for successfully rehabilitating Islamic extremists from Himandhoo Island who had clashed with the military in the Maldives. The young scholar is currently in the United States attending a seminar on countering radicalism.

The U.S. government's announcement comes at a time when the Obama Administration is keen on closing the high security prison in Cuba reserved for terrorists. However, cases of ex-prisoners from Guantanamo taking lead in new clashes in Afghanistan has created considerable opposition for plans to close down the prison, initiated by the Bush administration after the 9/11 attacks.

During Nasheed's meeting with Finland's President Tarja Halonen at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki, Nasheed said the Maldives was the only country in the world which has declared Internet as a fundamental right.

Nasheed, a former Amnesty International Prisoner of Conscience, became the President after a landmark election in 2008 that ushered democracy to the small island nation.

During Nasheed's meeting with his Finnish counterpart he said the Maldives was ready to transfer knowledge and technology to Finland. Nasheed updated Halonen on the high-tech companies operating in the internet sector in the Maldives and gave details of the recent acquiring of the majority shares of the Maldives telecom company Dhiraagu by Cable & Wireless of the United Kingdom.

Minister of State for Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has urged the British to close down London pubs. During a recent visit to the UK, the state minister from the Maldives urged the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Cabinet Office, Home Office and heads of counter-terrorism in the Justice Ministry to close down the pubs in London because it was unacceptable to sell alcohol in densely populated cities.

Shaheem attended discussions on counter-terrorism with a range of relevant authorities in the UK during his trip. He also met with Abbas Faiz, the general secretary of Amnesty International.

“The main objective was to discuss rapidly growing concerns around extremism and terrorism with relevant stakeholders in the UK,” Shaheem told Minivan News.

“There was a lot of discussion on ideas, such as how to fight ideologies and radical ideas. It was a very nice trip. I learned how to stop radical ideas such as celebration of New Year, Valentine's Day and the April Fool Day.”

Shaheem also informed the UK authorities on the recent campaign led by his party Adhaalath to curb the sale of alcohol in Male'.

In March the state minister will travel to Bangladesh to attend a regional conference for religious leaders organised by USAID and the Asia Foundation.

Shaheem noted that the Maldives was relatively young and inexperienced in fighting ideologies and radicalisation, saying that countries like the US and Pakistan “have been active in this field for a long time.”

“We will benefit from a similar approach as Malaysia,” he said.

Maldives hosts secret Taliban talks

A group of Afghan MPs, “a government official” and seven people linked to the Taliban met in the Maldives last weekend for secret talks, according to a report by Al Jazeera in Afghanistan.

According to the report, the talks were part of an ambitious plan to bring peace to the war-torn country by offering cash, jobs and incentives to Taliban fighters in exchange for laying down their arms.

The Al Jazeera report claimed the Taliban selected the Maldives as the venue for the meeting “because it was the only place the fighters felt safe.”

President's Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair acknowledged that the government had received reports of sightings of “a group of people who look like the Taliban wandering around the streets of Male’.”

"They bought watermelons and papayas from Local Market. They bought Dhiggaru Rihaakuru to take back to the mountains. They were just like any other tourist group from a passenger line visiting Male'," Zuhair said.

“Our stance is that the fact people happen to look like the Taliban doesn’t mean they should be labelled that way,” he said.

"We have a sad history of people being labelled. Umar Zahir labelling footballers with long hair. Adam Zahir labelling young men with long hair as drug addicts. Abdulla Hameed being labelled as gay. Gayoom being labelled as a dictator. Anni being labelled as someone who doesn't look like a President. Last, but not least, I am labelled as being always high on dope. We are trying to overcome such labelling and build a tolerant society under the MDP government," Zuhair explained.

President reiterates government's commitment to electricity subsidies

In his weekly radio address President Mohamed Nasheed has reiterated the government’s commitment to assist those unable to pay their electricity bills. Noting that several people were concerned over the electricity tariffs hike in Male’, the President said the government will address those concerns by providing candles to the people who were unable to pay their electricity bills.

“Our estimate is that about 3000 households struggled in paying their bills. Therefore, after consulting with the Cabinet Secretary, I have decided to provide them more candles,” he said.

The President acknowledged that initially sufficient information was not provided on electricity subsidies, adding that more people were now aware of the changes and the application process for candles.

"Our target is to be carbon neutral by 2020. We can't use fulhi bathi anymore because it is run by kerosene. For those who are struggling with the burden of electricity bills, we will provide them with candles. That is the policy of the government.”

In his weekly address, the President discussed his visits to the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and India.

He was in Abu Dhabi from 17-20 January and addressed the World Future Energy Summit. In Abu Dhabi the President held talks with government officials and private sector.

Later he travelled to Bahrain on an official visit. In Bahrain, President met with representatives from banking, finance and investment sectors and discussed business and investment opportunities in the Maldives. He also met with the King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and other senior government officials.

The President is currently in Chennai, where he will address an economic summit organised by the Candle Manufacturers of Chennai and hold meetings with Indian businesses. He arrived in Chennai, early this morning.

“You know, they said this day would never come. They said our sights were set too high. They said that this country was too divided; too disillusioned to ever come together around a common purpose.”

So spoke Barack Obama on the night that he won the Iowa caucuses.

These are words that could have easily been spoken by Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) had he contested in the US Democratic Party primaries instead of challenging Mohamed Munavvar in the MDP primaries in Maldives.

People try to put us down

When Anni and other reformists first launched the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) many did not believe that it had a chance of succeeding. Anni himself was seen as a figure who did not “look” like a president because he did not regularly visit Singapore for Botox injections. This is why Dr Ahmed Shaheed promoted a mullah called Dr Hassan Saeed who looked like a President.

Despite all this, against the odds, Anni managed to cobble together a victory in the presidential election. The election was, in many ways, a fairy tale. Or, as Playboy magazine described it, a “momentous victory of belief against chaos.”

Talking ‘bout my generation

Since assuming power President Nasheed has further confounded critics by fitting into the role in a refreshing way. He has scaled back on the pomp and ceremony that Gayoom enjoyed. He exposed the lavish lifestyle Gayoom enjoyed such as the gold-plated toilet seats in the President’s Office. Nasheed said the private office Gayoom had inside the President’s Office was too large and luxurious for the new President to move in. For a few months Nasheed stayed behind a desk in a corridor of the President’s Office. Then he moved into the large and luxurious office Gayoom had used.

Domestic bliss

And what has been achieved in one year? Better governance: corruption has been curbed and there is greater transparency. Nasheed has appointed experienced politicians such as Ibrahim Hussain Zaki to key government posts to make sure the machinery of the government is well-oiled and free from corruption.

Steps have also been taken to foster a climate for economic development. A responsible economic framework has been established with the assistance of the IMF. The Ministry of Economic Development has been put in the hands of a physiotherapist; because only a physiotherapist has the skilled hands to heal a bruised economy.

International affairs

President Nasheed’s star has really shone on the international stage. Seeing their foe being elevated to the role of global statesman has been a particular source of ire for his critics.
Since taking office, Nasheed has forged close links with democratic India and spent a night at Windsor Castle with Queen Elizabeth II. Being the modest person he is, Nasheed has downplayed the significance of this.

NCIT bans Cabinet Secretary from using Facebook

The National Center for Information Technology (NCIT) has banned the Cabinet Secretary Abdulla Saeed from using Facebook during working hours.

"We have noticed productivity of the government employees declining because they are using Facebook during office hours. We imposed the ban on Cabinet Secretary because he has been very active on Facebook," NCIT said in a statement.

"It is regretful NCIT has made this decision. I am not using Facebook for taking care of cows in Farmville or to play Mafia Wars. It is pathetic NCIT does not understand that governments and politicians from Barack Obama to Rowan Atkinson are using Facebook for keeping the citizens informed of the government policies," the Cabinet Secretary said in a statement.

When reporters asked the Cabinet Secretary if he had any role in appointing his sister as Dhiraagu's Chairperson, he denied the allegations.

"The MDP government does not practice nepotism. MDP Chairperson Mariya's sister was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister not because she is a nutritionist but because her ex-brother-in-law is the most experienced Maldivian on foreign affairs. C&W is in talks with Mahmood Razi, the Chairman of Privatisation Committee. He is also the Minister of Civil Aviation and Communication.

Invest Maldives has announced to privatize MNBC and C&W is going to charge high prices from all Maldivian households for watching television. Services that will become expensive after C&W acquires MNBC:

1. Television Maldives will become more expensive (users will have to pay a monthly fee to watch TVM)
2. Voice of Maldives (Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu) will become more expensive (Bakuru will have to pay for listening to his favourite radio programme)

Naseem's urgent appeal to bloggers

Frustrated with the outcome of his meeting with the Communications Authority of Maldives, Naseem contemplated a hunger strike against the high prices Dhiraagu charges for internet. However, realizing how futile it would be to carry out a hunger strike when most people in the country are abstaining from having food during the day, Naseem abandoned this idea. Instead, he decided to send an urgent appeal to all Maldivian bloggers through this blog. This is what Naseem has to say:

"Friends. Bloggers. Countrymen and countrywomen. Lend me your ears.

We have defeated an evil dictatorship only last year. But our struggle did not end at that point. We have to rise against the corporate giants like Dhiraagu, ROL and Careless & Worthless, excuse me, Cable & Wireless. For they are sucking our blood and committing daylight robbery. Never before in the history of Maldives has so few robbed so many in such huge proportions.

I call upon all Maldivian bloggers, to get up and stand up for your rights. I am fully aware most of you blog while sitting down near your computers. However, this is no time to sit. This is no time to be idle. This is the time to stand up. For good humans are judged not from the quizzes they complete on facebook but by the strength of their resolve.

I ask all bloggers to join me in my campaign to hold the internet service providers accountable."

On Sunday Naseem went to Communications Authority of Maldives (CAM) to complain about the high internet charges of Dhiraagu and the poor service the ISP offers to businesses in Maldives. Naseem met with two gentlemen from CAM, whose names have been withheld following their request. Naseem put a tape recorder on the table, sat back in the executive chair in the meeting room and inhaled a deep breath.

CAM: Now how can we help you?

Naseem: Are you the regulatory authority for communications in the Maldives?

CAM: In fact, we are.

Naseem: Could you enlighten me on what types of regulatory work you have done in the past few decades er... years?

CAM: We give licenses to mobile phone companies. We determine the type of frequencies that should be issued to broadcasting companies. We issue licenses to Internet Service Providers. It is also our mandate to ensure microwave ovens do not emit frequencies that disrupt the communications of the whole country.

Naseem: It looks like you have been very busy over the past decades. To cut a long story short, I am here to complain about one particular company in the Maldives, an ISP. I am deeply distraught over their high internet charges and poor service.

CAM: We have an uneasy feeling you are talking about Dhiraagu. Complaints about Dhiraagu is not something new to us. Look at that filing cabinet over there. There are volumes of complaints filed there about Dhiraagu.

Naseem: So what has your esteemed authority done about those complaints?

CAM: We have done practically nothing but ignore those complaints. Even though we are the regulatory authority Dhiraagu is more powerful than us. All our decisions to reform Dhiraagu were overridden by high government officials In the previous government.

Naseem: Are you talking about officials like Fathulla Jameel who received a huge commission aka bribe out of Cable & Wireless' deals with the government of Maldives?

CAM: We wouldn't be so foolish to mention names. Especially when defamation cases amounting to millions of rufiya can be filed in Maldivian courts these days.

Naseem: How do I know if you also didn't receive a cut of the commission to buy your silence concerning Dhiraagu.

CAM: You will never know. That's how it works.

Naseem: Now that the government has changed and with a presidential commission being formed to probe the corruption of the past government, don't you think you have more space to regulate Dhiraagu?

CAM: Are you so foolish to believe that any government, whether democratic or dictatorial, will cut its own revenue stream? Do you know how much Dhiraagu contributes to the government revenue?

Naseem: I prefer not to know. All I know is ordinary Maldivians are suffering. We are paying high prices for Dhiraagu services. Isn't this a rather unfair way of taxation?

CAM: This is how the system works.

Naseem: What is this rumour about a deal with Cable & Wireless?

CAM: It is confidential. We are not allowed to talk about it.

Naseem: So there is a deal. Are you planning to sell all shares to Cable & Wireless?

CAM: Not us. As you know we are the regulatory authority. We will continue to regulate regardless of who owns the shares. But don't you think it will be a wise move to sell shares to C&W to raise some income for the government? As you know we are experiencing a rather bad economic recession. Besides, the MDP government has pledged privatisation of state-owned enterprises.

Naseem: Don't say it is an MDP government. It is an MDP-Adhaalath Coalition. I am not sure what Dr Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari and his associates think of selling our telecom company to a British company. Is it Haram or Halal? These questions need to be sorted out among the coalition partners before a decision can be made.

CAM: It is not in our mandate to make the decisions. We regulate.

Naseem: I think this is a rather futile conversation. I have this feeling that all decisions have already been made. Who profits from these deals? Who gets a commission? Is it the Special Enjoy? The Cabinet Secretary? The President? Who are the people in President's Office making these decisions?

CAM: We can't answer those questions. We have wives and children to take care of. We need our jobs. Besides our mandate is to regulate.

Naseem: I can see that you enjoy your jobs. Why don't you decrease the temperature in the room to a few more degrees so this room will be colder and even more comfortable?

CAM: If you think this job is easy then you are mistaken. It is not easy to ignore the complaints of citizens like you and play the dirty politics. We also have consciences. What we lack is enough money to support our families.

Naseem: If you receive so much pressure not to regulate Dhiraagu, then why aren't you taking any action about ROL? As you know, ROL also charges high prices and their services are much worse than Dhiraagu.

CAM: You are very naive, aren't you? If we regulate ROL and force ROL to provide better services, all customers will move to ROL. How can Dhiraagu exist in such a scenario? Who will provide revenue for the government? What about the fat commissions?

Naseem: So you gave license to ROL to give the impression that there is free market competition while the whole stage has been set for Dhiraagu?

CAM: More or less that is the story.

Naseem: I think this is a story I will share with newspapers.

CAM: You are more foolish than we thought. Which newspaper in Maldives will run a story against Dhiraagu? Haven't you seen how many programmes they sponsor on TVM and how many full-colour ads they have on the newspapers. No newspaper, radio station, TV channel or news website will ever say anything against Dhiraagu.

Naseem: But Dhiraagu is partly owned by the government. The government should be accountable to the people. The people should start asking questions about how Dhiraagu is run, how Dhiraagu spends money on advertising and how Dhiraagu does unethical business.

CAM: But people don't have a voice. We issue the radio frequency to only the oligarchs in this country. Newspapers will never say anything against Dhiraagu. The people's representatives in the Majlis are too busy taking home their monthly salary. Major political parties will not comment on Dhiraagu.

Naseem: So what is the fate of us?

CAM: Slavery. As before. Now it is almost 1.30 pm. To reduce the government expenditure, we are not permitted to work after office hours. Now if you will excuse us.....

True Corporation give 2 megabits per second for 890 baht for one month. It is 27 in US dollars. That is unlimited internet for less than 400 rufiyaa. True Corporation also give 8 megabits for businesses. Naseem say Dhiraagu and ROL charge very much from businesses in Maldives. As a result Thailand businesses are growing very fast but Maldives businesses do not grow fast. Naseem now thinking of going to Communications Authority of Maldives to complain.

Last night I met my friend Naseem in front of Seagull Cafe. Now Seagull Cafe closed so we can't enter. Naseem and I cross the street and stand in front of Dhiraagu.

Rozaina first had a chance to sit in Majlis chamber when she was appointed as an Appointed Member by President Gayoom last year. As soon as the new president Nasheed was sworn in he replaced Gayoom's appointees with his own. Saying this was illegal Rozaina challenged this at the court but did not win. To win back her Majlis seat Rozaina contested for Thulusdhoo Dhaaira in the election this time. As a child Rozaina had visited Thulusdhoo several times as her father had owned garment factories there. As the family fortune declined during the last deacde and as they were forced to close down factories, Rozaina's enthusiasm to serve the Thulusdhoo people did not wane. As vengeance against President Nasheed for removing her from Majlis seat, she is also bringing to the Majlis her husband Nashiz, who won Alifushi Dhaaira, Nashiz's brother Thasmeen Ali, who won Kendhoo Dhaaira, and Thasmeen's wife Visaam Ali, who won Maduvvari Dhaaira. Rozaina's father Don Adam Fulhu also contested in the Kaashidhoo Dhaaira but narrowly lost. However, the Don is pleased that the family has won so many seats. Today I watched TVM political debate. Noonu Atoll Manadhoo Section debate. Presenter asked question why people should vote for you to candidates. Candidate Abdul Salam Arif said people should vote for him because he prays five times a day.

Candidate Abdul Salam Arif very pious man with beard. He was educated in Malaysia. A Lawyer. He did not attack any other candidate.

Another candidate Ahmed Faisal also very talkative candidate. He was born in Lhohi. But he makes me suspicious. Because he studied in UK, he worked in UK and he said he studied economics. But he worked in Maldives Police Service. What would a police officer do in two years working in UK and why police officer study economics? Ahmed Faisal was TVM presenter with Mariyam Waheeda when presidential election results announced in October. Was Ahmed Faisal put there by secret police to change vote result announced by TVM? I suspicious. When one candidate say Ahmed Faisal try to destroy democracy as police officer Ahmed Faisal become very sad. He say go and ask Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz as Ahmed Faisal try to do many good things for democracy as police officer.

This makes I more suspicious. Because Abdulla Riyaz is very notorious man. Even now trying to get votes for Ghassan Maumoon in Thimarafushi. Was Ahmed Faisal studying with Ghassan in UK? I become more suspicious now. I think many secret police men supporting Gayoom are candidates.

Today debate MDP candidate Thoriq and DRP candidate Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) also very talkative. But very difficult to believe what Mundhu say because he was liar supporting Gayoom. My favourite from debate is Abdul Salam Arif who prays five times a day.

The special delegation that is currently touring Italy includes Abdulla (Lolly) Jabir, member of Parliament for Gaaf Dhaal and Deputy Leader of the Republican Party. Jabir is meeting the businessmen of Italy to get more investment for the tourism sector of the Maldives. The members of the delegation also include Tourism Minister Ahmed Ali Sawad and Attorney General Dhiyana Saeed.

Recently Special Adviser to the President Dr Hassan Saeed said many problems with appointing Board to the Board of Directors of Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC). Many conflict of interest and lack of trust of public in the President because of appointment, Dr Hassan revealed.

This happens because there is no legal great person working inside President's Office. Main legal advice to the president is from Attorney General Dhiyana Saeed. But Dhiyana Saeed is not qualified to be Attorney General because she got promotion too fast under Gayoom government.

Now in the Board of MTDC there is the Managing Director of Yacht Tours. This is conflict of interest because Yacht Tours have to pay money to MTDC. Many problems with Yacht Tours and MTDC. Abdulla Jabir is Attorney General Dhiyana Saeed's husband. Abdulla Jabir is the Chairman of Yacht Tours.

We elected Nasheed for president because we want to reduce corruption and conflict of interest. Now the government appointments going same way as Gayoom's government. The solution to this is put a great legal person, less corrupt person, as Special Envoy to President and give desk to that person, or small office, or cubicle inside President's Office.

That person is Dr Mohamed Munavvar. He should be made Special Envoy to President too. He can work very well with Zaki because he was Zaki's close buddy during Gayoom regime. This will reduce embarrassment for government arising out of decisions Zaki make without legal background. After hard working week at President's Office Munavvar and Zaki can go to Velaavaru on weekends and have Sula Shiraz.

Special Enjoy of the President has visited Velaavaru resort to participate in the new year celebration.

"Dr Abdul Majeed Bari has banned all discos in Male. I am left with no choice but to celebrate new year in Velaavaru to wine, dine and sixty-nine," Special Enjoy told our reporters over a glass of Sula Shiraz.

The Special Enjoy was joined by former Attorney General, also former MDP President, Dr Mohamed Munavvar. In recent weeks Dr Munavvar has tried to patch up the soiled relations with his former MDP colleagues. He was invited to open the southern province office in Addu as a result.

Dr Munavvar was the Special Enjoy's close buddy in the cabinet of former president Gayoom who is planning to clone Faathma Fulhi to increase his own popularity and overthrow President Nasheed.
