President Nasheed to lead Gay Pride March in Maldives

President Mohamed Nasheed is to lead the first ever Gay Pride March in the Maldives on October 10. The march is named Dhivehi Gay Pride March and will be held on Majeedhee Magu in Male at 8.00 pm on October 10.

"President Nasheed is not gay. But he is happy. He is happy with the speed of land reclamation done by Boskalis and he decided to join this march to show how liberal the Maldives has become under his visionary leadership," said Mohamed Zuhair, the President's press secretary.

Since assuming power President Nasheed has awarded the nation's highest medal of honour to Abdulla Hameed, widely believed to be a practicing homosexual. Hameed, brother of ex-president Gayoom, filled high posts under the previous government.

Maldivian Democratic Party has also formed an alliance with Labour Party, whose founder Red Wave Saleem is a close friend of Hameed.
