Gayoom urges Maldives to quit European Union

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has urged Maldives to withdraw its membership of European Union. Gayoom said this at the last rally held to garner support for his half-brother Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

"Maldives joined EU during my rule. At that time there were many benefits Maldives received from membership of European Union. Maldivian seamen were able to get employment in Greek ships. There was only a nominal duty levied on Maldivian fish exports to Europe. But now EU is interfering with our domestic affairs. After Nasheed gave a laadheenee and laaqaumee speech in Denmark, the EU has decided to charge higher import duty on our tuna unless we demolish Theemuge and build a church there," Gayoom said.

"We can't compromise our sovereignty. Our forefathers defeated European invaders once and we will do so again. I will ask the next President to terminate membership of Maldives in the European Union," Gayoom said as thousands of supporters cheered. "We will then join ASEAN as we are getting more tourists from the Far East than from Europe now."

Dhiraagu sponsors Waheed's overseas trip

President of Maldives Dr Waheed Hassan is leaving Maldives on a short trip sponsored by Dhiraagu. Waheed said he is leaving to Singapore for a medcial treatment of his wife First Lady Ilham Hussain. Waheed said there is nothing he can do now in Maldives which he can't do through a phone call while abroad.

Dhiraagu is the number one telecom company in Maldives. They charge a very high fee for telecom services such as overseas calls and internet. Sometimes they hold promotions such as reduced rates for pilgrims visiting Mecca. But they did not provide low rates for overseas calls when President Waheed and former President Nasheed went for an Umra in Mecca earlier this year. Many people disbelieved President Nasheed when he said he went for an Umra. They disbelieved him because he is accused of being 'laadheenee'. But recently leaked photos taken from a NASA satellite shows President Nasheed inside a vehicle wearing a pilgrim's white 'ihram' dress and speeding across the desert. Still the disbelievers said this was a fake photo taken in the land area President Nasheed reclaimed in Hinnavaru.

Dhiraagu is providing a special rate for President Waheed to make phone calls from Singapore.

"Ladies' finger is good for cooking but not good for pointing": Ilham

Ilham Ahmed, MP for Gemanafushi and Deputy Leader of Republican Party, has vowed to cut off the fingers of TVM anchor Liza Laurella if the party's presidential candidate Qasim Ibrahim wins the presidential election. Republican Party is unhappy about Liza's grilling of Qasim in a Siyaasath programme TVM has broadcasted recently. Qasim was visibly growing impatient at Liza's pointing of fingers at him and during the live programme the candidate had to remind the TV anchor that pointing fingers at people was a rude behaviour.

"We would not mind if she metaphorically pointed fingers at our candidate. We are used to accusations and rumours against our candidate. What we find utterly unacceptable and completely disgusting is that Liza was literally pointing her fingers at our beloved candidate," Ilham justified the Republican Party's indignation.

"Ladies' finger is good for cooking but not good for pointing," Ilham said.

Ilham is known for his promises to cut off things and the young politician has been accused of cutting off various objects. In a Republican Party rally he recently promised that a government formed by Qasim will amputate hands of blackmailers.  In February 2012 he was accused of cutting off a cable used by Maldives National Broadcasting Corporation (MNBC) to broadcast a committee session of the parliament. Ilham is sometimes known for receiving cuts and injuries too. In October 2011 he was at the receiving end of a cut when he claimed to have sustained injuries inside the parliament. Ilham accused MP Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonda) of throwing an empty glass at him.

Ilham is also famous for resigning from the Deputy Leader position of various political parties. In September 2011 he resigned from the post of Deputy Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP). In April 2013 he resigned from the post of Deputy Leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Ilham's love-hate relationship with MNBC and TVM started after he was fired from the post of a producer at TVM. However, his boldest threat against TVM so far has been the promise to cut off the fingers of presenter Liza Laurella.

"You can't give the finger to our presidential candidate and get away with it. Thank you for the Laura but no thanks for the Laurella," Ilham said.

Qasim's mother died before he was born

Qasim's mother died 3 months before he was born. His father got blind when he was 3 months old. He came to Male' as an orphan. He cleaned the bicycles of Abbas Ibrahim and Ilyas Ibrahim when he was growing up in Endherimaage. As a reward for keeping the bicycle spotless and clean, Ilyas is now supporting Qasim in the presidential race. You also can support Qasim. This blog supported Qasim in the 2008 presidential race too. Adhaalath Party is supporting Qasim too. If you are a kind person and if you get easily moved to tears after watching Hindhi dramas you must vote for Qasim because he came to Male' as an orphan and built a business empire. Qasim deserves our sympathy.

MDP Office to be relocated to H. Rabee-ee Manzil

MDP Secretariat has informed the media today that MDP Office is to be relocated to H. Rabee-ee Manzil. MDP said the relocation is necessary because MDP has more members now and MDP needs a bigger space to prepare for this year's presidential election.

Hamid Abdul Gafoor told the media that MDP members will not experience any inconvenience from the relocation because the current office is also in Sosun Magu.

"We are relocating to a premise that is in Sosun Magu. We just moved a few meters closer to Usfasgandu and this will make it easy to conduct logistics in the campaign," Hamid said.

The new office of MDP is a tall building in Sosun Magu in front of Ibrahimi Mosque.

"I remember stopping near that building and shouting at the top of my voice in every MDP demonstration. I always thought the building belonged to a Baagee. I don't know why that building was selected as the office," said Ismail Fulhu, an MDP activist at Usfasgandu.

Ismail Fulhu said MDP will win the election from one round because some powerful person recently joined MDP.

Sheikh Imran to circumcise Jeffery Salim Waheed

Sheikh Imran, the politically active religious scholar from Adhaalath Party, is to circumcise Jeffery Salim Waheed, the one and only son of President Dr Mohamed Waheed Hassan. A circumcision party is to be held at Hilaaleege this month.

"I did not circumcise my son Jeffery Salim when he was a child because I wanted him to discover the true path when he grew up. I wanted him to read holy books, get enlightened and make a choice as an adult. After spending one year in the company of Adhaalath Party scholars, my son has now learned a lot about the true path," the President told Television Maldives.

Sheikh Imran said it gives him immense pleasure to circumcise the son of the Head of State.

"We have been a great pillar of support for Dr Waheed ever since he took oath as President after defeating that devil Mohamed Nasheed in our glorious people's revolution last year. I have had many opportunities to talk to Jeffery Salim in the past year. He is a Stanford-educated bright chap who can be an ideal Muslim after he is circumcised," Sheikh Imran told TVM.

"We outlined our terms to the President Waheed before we declared our support to him in this year's presidential election. One of our terms is assigning Adhaalath Party three slots in the cabinet including the Ministry of Islamic Affairs if Dr Waheed won the presidency. We also requested Dr Waheed's son Jeffery Salim to be circumcised according to Islamic tradition. We are happy that Dr Waheed agreed to our demands," Sheikh Shaheem Ali Saeed, the Minister of Islamic Affairs told TVM.

"God willing, we will defeat Nasheed, Yameen, Qasim and Thasmeen in the presidential election. We will establish a true Islamic republic with Islamic Sharia under the leadership of Dr Waheed," Sheikh Shaheem said.

Hash oil can be made available cheaper: Yameen

Hash oil can be made available in Maldives cheaper than now, presidential hopeful and PPM's presidential primaries contender Abdulla Yameen has said.

Speaking to supporters in a ceremony to officially launch his campaign for PPM's presidential primaries, Yameen said hash oil is now available at very high prices in Male.

"I know because I have expertise in the economy. I know because I am the biggest seller of hash oil in Maldives," Yameen said.

Yameen said in his presidency he will make hash oil available cheaply for all young people of Maldives and for fishermen of Maldives.

He said there are regions near Maldives where hash oil is produced in high quantities. He said there is no reason to believe that hash oil can't be produced in Maldives. Yameen said the Golden Crescent is in South Asia and the Golden Triangle is also in a region Maldivian businessmen often visit. He said if hash oil can be produced in neighbouring countries of Pakistan and India, it can be produced in Maldives too.

Yameen said he is very serious when he talks about producing hash oil in Maldives.

Congress Party asks Nasheed to run in Indian election

Congress Party of India has asked ex-President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed who is currently hiding inside the Indian High Commission to run in the Indian general elections.

"We have a shortage of capable candidates the public will accept as a Prime Minister. Rahul Gandhi is young and immature," Minister of External Affairs Salman Khurshid told AFP.

A top Indian diplomat said India will give asylum to Nasheed and he will later contest in the Indian election. Asked if the Indian public will accept a person who was born outside India as Prime Minister the diplomat said it was no problem.

"Indian public rejected Sonia Gandhi because she is white-skinned and they knew for sure that she was born in another country. Most people will not realize that Nasheed was born in Maldives because he is dark-skinned and looks like an Indian. If Nasheed can fool 350,000 people of Maldives he can fool the whole Indian population too," the diplomat explained.

Pope resigns to join Adhaalath Party

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict stunned the Roman Catholic Church on Monday when he announced he would stand down, the first pope to do so in 700 years, saying he wanted to join the Adhaalath Party of Maldives.

Church officials tried to relay a climate of calm confidence in the running of a 2,000-year-old institution, but the decision could lead to uncertainty in a Church already besieged by scandals. The soft-spoken German, who always maintained that he never wanted to be pope, was an uncompromising conservative on social and theological issues, fighting what he regarded as the increasing secularization of society.

Adhaalath Party has recently started a drive to increase membership after the lawmakers of Maldives passed a Law under which political parties with a membership of less than 10,000 could be dissolved. Many Maldivians are joining the party following its call to join the party to safeguard Islam in Maldives. Pope Benedict could have been attracted to Adhaalath Party after its recent victories in Maldives including the toppling of the government of Mohamed Nasheed and the annulment of an agreement with Indian company GMR. As Adhaalath Party increases its influence in Maldives, the Pope has seen a rapid decline in Church attendance in the West, especially in his native Europe. Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said Benedict sees Adhaalath Party and Sheikh Imran as the only saviours of the world from secularization.

In an announcement read to cardinals in Latin, the universal language of the Church, the 85-year-old said: "Well aware of the seriousness of this act, with full freedom I declare that I renounce the ministry of Bishop of Rome, Successor of St Peter ...

"As from 28 February 2013, at 20:00 hours (1900 GMT) the See of Rome, the See of St. Peter will be vacant and a conclave to elect the new Supreme Pontiff will have to be convoked by those whose competence it is."

The resignation means that cardinals from around the world will begin arriving in Rome in March and after preliminary meetings, lock themselves in a secret conclave and elect the new pope from among themselves in votes in the Sistine Chapel.

There has been growing pressure on the Church for it to choose a pope from the developing world to better reflect where most Catholics live and where the Church is growing. "It could be time for a black pope, or a yellow one, or a red one, or a Latin American," said Guatemala's Archbishop Oscar Julio Vian Morales.

It remains to be seen if Jesus Afeef could become the first Pope from South Asia.

I can drill for oil easier: Buruma Gasim

Maldivian presidential candidate Buruma Gasim Ibrahim has said if he is elected for president, he can drill for oil in the Maldives more effectively than any other candidate. Gasim said this after Yameen Abdul Gayoom, a contender for PPM's primaries, said that a PPM government will drill for oil in Maldives. "I can drill for oil deeper and easier because my name is Buruma," Gasim said in a campaign rally. "Yameen can sell oil to Burma but he has no experience of handling a Buruma."
