Maldives soldiers deserting

Military police are doing special operation to look for deserters in MNDF. Maldives soldiers now deserting after Maldives government decided to send them for peacekeeping with UN. Many soldiers deserting because they were trained for war and not peacekeeping.

"Send us to war zones. We don't want to be peacekeepers. We are soldiers trained to kill," said one deserter caught by military police.

Defence Minister Thalhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu today told media everything in military will be open to journalists. He agreed to take media to special operations and training because after several weeks mystery of soldier who died in bodyguard training is not solved.

"if media is there we will see how the solider died with bullet wound in head," one journalist said.

The defense minister said MNDF is planning to send the deserters to the wars in deserts in Libya and Somalia.

"The deserters deserve nothing but the desert," said Thalhath the minister.
