Man with four wives should not be detained: Adhaalath

Adhaalath Party, the coalition partner of MDP, has issued a fatwa today saying Gasim Ibrahim, a man with four wives, should not be kept in detention.

"A man who can control four wives can control the nation," explained Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, the State Minister for Islamic Affairs.

Adhaalath Party came into the ruling coalition because they were a member of the Jumhooree Alliance which consisted of Republican Party, Adhaalath Party and Maldivian National Congress. Last week the National Council of MDP passed a resolution to terminate the pact it had signed with the Jumhooree Alliance, and terminate any political jobs that were allocated to Jumhooree Alliance as part of that pact.

However, when the cabinet was reenacted President Mohamed Nasheed gave the portfolio of Minister of Islamic Affairs to Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari of Adhaalath Party. According to a political analyst who goes to tea with Dr Mohamed Munavvar, this is a clear violation of the MDP National Council's resolution to terminate the pact with Jumhooree Alliance.
