From Al Fresco to Theemuge

From Al Fresco to Theemuge is a documentary directed by Mohamed Niyaz (Tedry) whose debut feature film Dheriya won critical acclaim in the Maldives. A production of Eternal Pictures, From Al Fresco to Theemuge is the documentary that will create raves in next year's Cannes and Berlin Film Festivals.

This is the story of one man who realizes his childhood dream of becoming the president of Maldives through his sheer determination, vision and hard work. This film is the story of Dr Munavvar, born in Addu Atoll Meedhoo, and migrated to Male' to complete his secondary education in Majeediyya School. This is the story of his rise in government, education in Russia and Canada, and how he became the Attorney General in his early 30s. This documentary traces the life of Dr Munavvar in the ten years he spent in Gayoom's cabinet and shows how he ultimately became the president of MDP through his shrewd political strategies.

This is a documentary that students of political science, scholars and members of academia must watch as director Tedry shows the political genius of Dr Munavvar through rare interviews and videos of past speeches. This is the film which will explain how a successful table-to-table campaign is conducted with guaranteed success.

From Al Fresco to Theemuge is the story of how one man succeeds to enter the presidential palace Theemuge through his strategies carried out in the nearby cafe Al Fresco.

Only an old mosque and a street separates the presidential palace Theemuge from STO Trade Center where the cafe Al Fresco is located in the ground floor. It is there in this cafe that Dr Munavvar and his supporters, including director Tedry, plot their plans for Dr Munavvar's entry into the palace as president of Maldives.

It is not by a stroke of good luck that Dr Munavvar chose a cafe in the block next to Theemuge. As the old saying goes "the shortest distance between two points is a straight line".

This documentary is to be screened after Dr Munavvar is sworn in as the President of Maldives.

Going to Laamu for tsunami construction

I have to leave to Laamu Gan. Tusnami construction project by Red Cross there. I have to supervise work there. Company i work have many work there in Gan.

I am sad to leave. Because this blog is now many people read blog. I think less support for Dr Munavvar if nothing on this blog for one week. I think of giving blog password to Naseem. But problem he is not very friendly with technology. Naseem use iPhone but he not know how to use blog.

MALE, 20 MARCH 2008 - Businessman and member of MDP National Council, Ibrahim Didi (KD) has endorsed Dr Munavvar. KD is the owner of Fresh Air shop in Chandhanee Magu. He has given speeches in several MDP meetings.

KD is a close business associate of Mr Qasim Ibrahim, the Minister of Finance of Maldives and also Chairman of Villa Group. Besides KD, close associates of Qasim such as political strategist Kalbe are already in the Munavvar campaign. KD receives finance from Qasim Ibrahim for running his businesses. Dr Munavvar and Qasim Ibrahim are also very close friends. Qasim's support will be crucial for Dr Munavvar to win because Qasim will help raise more campaign funds for Dr Munavvar.

Kurendhoo Mahir endorses Dr Munavvar

MALE, 16 March 2008 - Political strategist and businessman Kurendhoo Mahir has endorsed Dr Munavvar in the MDP primary campaign. This endorsement comes as a huge boost for Dr Munavvar.

Mr Mahir is from Kurendhoo Island in Lhaviyani Atoll. He grew up in Endherimaage, the family house of First Lady Nasreena, in Male'. Today Mr Mahir is a respected businessman and an MDP activist. He has given speeches in several MDP meetings.

During the next few days more prominent businessmen and key figures in the society are expected to endorse Dr Munavvar. Among them, Mr Qasim Ibrahim, the Chairman of Villa Group, and Minister of Finance, is expected to back Dr Munavvar. Qasim's close associates like political strategist Kalbe are already working in the Munavvar campaign.

Mr Nazeer, a shareholder of the privately owned Sunland Hotels, which owns multiple resorts in the Maldives, is expected to support Dr Munavvar as well.

Dr Munavvar has close links within the Universal Resorts, which owns resorts in Seychelles and Malaysia in addition to the Maldives.

I go with Naseem to Al Fresco and we have Lavazza cafe. We print anti-munavvvar blog articles and we studyed it. Our conclusions.

Table-to-table campaign begins

A "table-to-table" campaign has been started today to campaign for Dr Munavvar. This table-to-table campaign means going from table to table in cafes telling the good things about Dr Munavvar. Naseem tell Anni stole Velaanaage. Anni stole Velaanaage because Velaanaage is more beautiful house than Kenereege. This was first time a house stolen. After Anni stole Velaanaage, it was found. So Dr Munavvar had no choice but to take Anni to court when Dr Munavvar was Attorney General.

Ali Didi tell breadfruit man story is true and Dr Munavvar very corrupt

I read this article about Dr Munavvar that say he is very bad man. I am now very confused. I wait for Naseem to come from Bangkok to clear this.

Today I meet Dr Munavvar's relative from Meedhoo. His name Ali Didi. We eat and Lavazza coffee at Al Fresco. Ali Didi tell me the story of breadfruit man is true. Ali Didi tell me that Dr Munavvar is personally jealous man and he was very bad Attorney General. I am now very confused.

Shabeer kept only Dhunikolhu island for himself, and he gave Velaavaru island to Zaki who in turn sold it to Champa Hussain Afeef. The case of Velaavaru island is unique. Maumoon Gayyoom knew that Zaki who was the head of the Tourism Ministry's resort awarding committee, had manipulated the process to benefit from Sunland's gaining of the three resorts. At one point, the case became very sensitive and Zaki had to seek the help of Gayyoom's executive secretary Abdulla Shahid and the then Attorney General Dr. Mohamed Munavvar to ensure the case was laid to rest.

Champa Afeef paid US$500,000 each to Abdulla Shahid and Dr. Munavvar to 'settle things', and Champa offered the same amount to Zaki. But Zaki wanted more than US$500,000 dollars and after some bickering, Champa who was desperate for Velaavaru island, promised to construct Zaki's eight-storey house complete with a swimming pool on the terrace. Now Zaki was really happy.

Zaki and his family frequently spent vacations in Lohifushi Resort at the time. The owners of the resort entertained him well. In return, DIMMS shareholders Solih and Didi each received a resort. Long after the resorts were given, Zaki continued to receive cheques from DIMMS.

Zaki's friend Dr Mohamed Munavvar, the Attorney General at the time, also visited resorts with Zaki and had drinking parties. Munavvar has family links with the Sunland group of resort operators. Out of the 14 islands, Sunland also received islands to develop as tourist resorts.

Munavvar as Attorney General changed a lot of things in the amended 1997 constitution to increase the President Maumoon Gayyoom's power. When Gayyoom removed the clause which stated that the president can only have two terms, Munavvar did not oppose it. This is just one example of many things Munavvar manipulated and twisted when he was Attorney General to further his own and Gayyoom's interests.

Munavvar can also be very petty. He once sentenced one of his neighbours to many years exile to another island, after that man who lives next door to people close to Munavvar accidentally picked a breadfruit from the 'wrong tree' because both breadfruit trees in the neighbouring houses had interlocking branches.

Munavvar's relatives decided to forgive the man, but Munavvar who bore a personal grudge against the man, gave him a disproportionately long sentence. This case was reported in the Maldives media but both Maumoon Gayyoom and Munavvar ignored it. This is how Munavvar treats even the weakest among his imagined 'opponents'. One can guess what torture he will inflict on any person who seriously politically opposes him if he is able to become Maldives' next dictator after Gayyoom is toppled by the MDP.

One similarity between the arrogant Dr Munavvar and paranoid Maumoon Gayyoom is that they both enjoy enslaving the people who work under them. If you fail to be publicly courteous and stand up when Munavvar enters the room, he will be your enemy for life. Munavvar lacks any sense of humanity towards his fellow beings and was even snobbish towards his fellow Cabinet members.

At various times he prevented draft bills by the former Labour minister Abdulla Kamaaludhdheen from being heard or read at the People's Majlis. (Abdulla Kamaaludhdheen is now the Fisheries minister; may Allah protect the fishing industry!)

All Maldivians know about Kamaaludhdheen's intellectual limitations, but bills by any majlis member, regardless of whether he can read and write, at least deserve a hearing.

Gayyoom removed Munavvar from the Attorney General's position in 2003 and offered him another post, but Munavvar declined the offer. It is believed that Gayyoom's brother and Trade Minister Abdullah Yameen wanted both Zaki and Munavvar removed from cabinet because Yameen saw them as a threat to his own presidential dreams.

Zaki and Munavvar never belonged to the core group of the Gayyoom regime, and they had visions of gaining power in the future. Both of them criticised Gayyoom in private gatherings, but in public it was all 'praise for Gayyoom'. Even in October 2003 during the peak of Gayyoom's election campaign, Zaki organised a ceremony supposedly to mark an anniversary of national planning in the Maldives, and Gayyoom was invited and gave a speech with maximum publicity. Zaki had organised similar publicity campaigns for Gayyoom on many occasions.

As the Attorney General, Munavvar relentlessly prosecuted political dissidents and people with moderate Islamic beliefs who were critical of the regime. His performance at the Sandhaanu prisoners trials, on behalf of Maumoon Gayyoom, was a national and legal disgrace. At the same time, he pulled strings to free his friends who committed all sorts of criminal acts.

There is no doubt that both Zaki and Munavvar would be faithful servants in the Gayyoom regime had they not been sidelined. If they had been offered acceptable cabinet portfolios they would have remained supporters of the regime and would not have 'defected' to the MDP.

As Attorney General, Munavvar received an opportunity to work towards constitutional and legal reform but he did nothing with his skills and power for the betterment of Maldives and Maldivians. Instead, he defended a corrupt regime, and ended up a corrupt politician.

Accusations of corruption leveled at the two have never been answered satisfactorily and it should be noted that Munavvar is the architect of the flawed constitution currently taking so much resources and time to ammend. To my knowledge neither have said sorry in public for anything they've done while with Gayoom. After Sandhaanu Zaki dramatically shouted at Munavvar, at his MDP leadership campaign, that he was responsible for the online editor's years of torture and suffering, the former attorney was forced to come up with with a half-hearted explanation. Apparently, Gayoom forced him to do all the bad things he did in office, while he was fully responsible for all the good things. In a laughable early speech at an MDP rally Munavvar blamed Gayoom for the constitution but took the credit for himself for creating the law school.

I want to ask Naseem about truth. He is very good Munavvar supporter. I think he come from Bangkok Airways flight soon.

Dr Munavvar has no history of corruption

Dr Munavvar is not a corrupt person. So many people say that Dr Munavvar is corrupt because they don't know Dr Munavvar. Friends and people who know Dr Munavvar know that he is as clean as the sand on our beaches.

When Munavvar was in cabinet, he was in the post of Attorney General. If you are the Attorney General you can't have any control over giving resorts to your friends. Because an Attorney General cannot give a resort to a friend. This is common sense. Even a child will know this.

Dr Munavvar and Abdullah Shahid were buddies at school. Later they worked together at foreign ministry. So they were good friends. When Munavvar was in cabinet he was seen together with Shahid many times. This was because they were good friends. Shahid could have abused his position in President's Office to award resorts to his friends. But Dr Munavvar had no involvement in the corruption of Shahid.

Ibrahim Hussain Zaki was Dr Munavvar's best buddy in the cabinet. When Zaki was the tourism minister they were seen together many times and they visited resorts many times. This was friendship. Dr Munavvar did not try to abuse this friendship and try to get resorts for his friends.

Zaki and Munavvar bid for Villingili in Addu Atoll because they knew that without influential people Villingili will never become a resort. So they did this because they wanted tourism to go to Addu. They told Maumoon also about bidding for this resort. It was all transparent and no corruption was involved.
